Most tools tell you only what they are good at. Here is the rest. The numbers on this page are measured from real searches and refreshed automatically, so they are as true on the day you read them as on the day we wrote them.
We have no outcome data yet
We can't tell you how many people found a supervisor through this, because we don't know. We are new, and we would rather say so than show you a number we invented. We are measuring it now, and when there is enough to mean something it goes on this page — whichever way it points.
Not every professor has a lab page
About 32% of results include the researcher's own lab or profile page. For the rest you get their papers and the routes to reach them: the institutional directory, ORCID, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and the corresponding-author line on their own publications. That is the path an experienced applicant already takes — we save you the clicks, not the knowledge.
We never guess an email address
If we don't have one, we say so and show you where to look. An address we constructed that bounces costs you an opportunity and costs us your trust, so we only ever show an address we read from the researcher's own page.
“Runs a lab” and “has room” are inferences, not facts
They are read from five years of publication activity: how much someone publishes, whether the group is growing, whether they appear as a senior author. That is a strong signal, and it is not the same as knowing who is recruiting this year. We label it as a signal and we won't pretend it is more.
Results depend on how you describe your field
A single broad keyword returns broad results: “imaging” on its own matches cardiac imaging, seismic imaging and cell microscopy alike. The confirmation step exists for this — before a search runs you see which research areas your words matched, and you can change them. It doesn't catch every case, so two or three specific keywords beat one general one.
Our results come from a scholarly database of published research
Coverage is strong across most fields and thinner in some, particularly work published outside English-language journals. If your field is thin there, it is thin here — and we would rather you knew that before paying than after.
A search takes about 35 seconds
We read real publication records when you press the button rather than handing you a stored list, which is what makes the results current. It is also why you wait. We are working on making it faster.
Where AI fits in
We use AI to read and compare research at a scale no one could manage by hand: summarising what a group works on, and judging how closely it sits to what you described. It doesn't invent anything. Every professor, paper and figure you see comes from a published record, and every name links back to the papers it came from. The judgment is assisted; the facts are not.
What we are trying to do for you
Our aim is to put you in front of the professors most likely to have room for you and to write back. That is why the results lean toward researchers who are building their groups — people earlier in their careers, or running labs that are visibly growing — rather than only the largest and most famous names, whose inboxes are fullest and whose places are fewest. We can't promise a reply, and nobody honestly can. What we can do is make sure the letters you send go to the people most likely to be in a position to answer them.
